University Health Network

University Health Network (UHN) is a publicly funded academic health network headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, operating 10 sites across the city and employing more than 20,000 people as TeamUHN. It is described as Canada's number one hospital and the world's number one publicly funded academic health network, and is consistently ranked among the world's top hospitals by Newsweek. Its work spans three connected fields: patient care, research discovery, and health education.

The network's member institutions include Toronto General Hospital, its flagship acute care facility, and Toronto Western Hospital. Princess Margaret Cancer Centre handles cancer care and oncology research; Toronto Rehabilitation Institute covers rehabilitation care and research; West Park Healthcare Centre focuses on complex continuing care and rehabilitation; and The Michener Institute of Education at UHN provides health sciences training. In a recent fiscal year the network recorded more than 39,000 acute inpatient stays and close to 121,000 emergency department visits.

Technical and clinical work at UHN covers cardiology, transplantation, neurosciences, oncology, surgical innovation, infectious diseases, genomic medicine and rehabilitation medicine. It runs the largest hospital-based research programme in Canada and is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto, with medical education, training and healthcare innovation forming part of its core remit. The network grew in part through strategic mergers and the integration of established institutions.
