The company operates through three subsidiaries: Piston Automotive, Piston Interiors, and Detroit Thermal Systems, covering value add assembly, automotive interior technologies, and thermal and climate control systems.

The company is the 24th largest automotive OEM supplier in the United States and the largest African American-owned automotive supplier in the country. It was ranked the largest minority-owned business by Crain's Detroit based on 2020 revenue. Piston Group was founded by NBA champion and industry executive Vinnie Johnson, and is described as a center of assembly innovation, with decades of experience in automotive interior technologies.
