Woodfibre Management Ltd

Woodfibre Management Ltd is building Woodfibre LNG, a net zero LNG export facility near Squamish, British Columbia, using electric drive compressors powered by BC Hydro hydroelectricity.

Woodfibre Management Ltd is developing Woodfibre LNG, a $5.1 billion liquefied natural gas export facility on the historical Squamish Nation village site of Swiyḍát, in Nexwnéwu7ts Átlᴎ'a7tsem (Howe Sound), about seven kilometres southwest of Squamish, British Columbia. The project is designed to produce 2.1 million tonnes of LNG a year and is described as the world's first net zero LNG export facility. Its ownership is split 70% to Pacific Energy Corporation (Canada) Limited and 30% to Enbridge Inc.

The engineering approach sets it apart from conventional LNG plants. Rather than gas-fired turbines, the facility uses electric drive compression technology, drawing its power entirely from BC Hydro's renewable hydroelectricity. The stated carbon intensity is 0.04 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of LNG, well below British Columbia's regulatory benchmark. Work on the project spans LNG production and export, net-zero emissions energy infrastructure, carbon intensity reduction and the integration of renewable hydroelectric power.

Environmental governance is another distinctive element. The Squamish Nation (Sᴎʔwx̱wú7mesh Ú xwumixw) was recognised as a full environmental regulator alongside federal and provincial authorities, a first for an industrial project in Canada, and its Environmental Assessment Agreement sets 25 legally binding conditions. The Squamish Nation acts as both project partner and environmental steward, and partnership with Indigenous peoples is treated as a core value of the development.
